Things To Do
Where are we? That may be your first thought as you travel down Route 66 towards Helendale. The scenery is bleak to say the least. Tattered broken down shacks, dust covered vehicles, and a backdrop of tumbleweeds and debris line the roadway as far as the eye can see.
Just as you’re ready to turn around and head back to the 15 freeway you note a change. Residences are spattered across the horizon, alfalfa fields stand out like bright colored quilt patches and there’s something about the brush covered hills that cause you to smile. Out of the corner of your eye, you spot what seems to be a mirage. Is that Silver Lakes? There’s actually water over there, and trees and the homes look huge! As you turn off Route 66 and onto Vista Road you tell yourself it’s not so bad after all. You cross the Mojave River and at the 4-way stop you indulge in a deep sigh of relief.
Now we’re talking! You note Silver Lakes Market, Professional Realty, Mojave Bank, and Calico Hardware Store all arranged in a darling town square. What? There’s a gift shop called Eclectic Mix, a pizza joint and even a video store. Several other businesses serve the community and as you drive through the parking lot, you note Hair Unlimited, a florist shop, Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant and there’s even a U.S. Post Office.
The kids don’t want to shop. They want to see the water. You decide to take Vista to the top of the hill and there sprawled before you is North Lake. The water is crystal blue, assorted boats escort their passengers slowly as if giving a tour, and the open water views are breathe taking! You tell the kids to hold on that you’ve seen pictures of a park right on the beach and that’s where you’ll unload for a stretch. As you drive north on Lakeview there are folks out strolling babies and dogs, bike riders, skate boarders, joggers and even golf carts out sharing the road with you.
Everyone seems so friendly that the kid’s wave at each person you drive by. The homes in Silver Lakes appear well cared for and the community very neat. You note as you admire each custom home that houses on the left enjoy open water views while the homes on the right border a golf course. Now, this is living!
The kids clamor to get out of the car as you pull into North Beach. Once stopped, they sprint to the beach where there’s a lifeguard on duty, children playing in the sand and a group of children swimming and playing in the water. The view from here is spectacular! The lake is good sized and beautiful houses with docks, decks and boats seem to go forever. The park offers a covered area for picnics, mature shade trees, restrooms and even playground equipment. You breathe in the clean air, stretch out on the lawn and watch the kids run and frolic on the beach. “Come on everyone, let’s load up there’s more to see!”
Once everyone’s buckled in it’s on with your adventure. You decide to continue around the lakes and then steer toward the golf course and equestrian center. The community is well laid out and there’s so little traffic that it gives you time to admire and ogle over the beautiful homes. Custom homes of every description and size are such a welcome surprise. No track homes here! You head up Lakeview and realize the lots are huge! All homes in this area boast at least a half acre lot. Yes, large enough to house two horses if you’re so inclined.
After concluding your ride around both lakes and the equestrian area, your trip brings you back to Helendale Road where you decide to continue north until you run into the 27 hole golf course. You’ve been told the community has three, 9 hole courses, and you can’t wait to play.
The best part of Silver Lakes is the association dues of $150.00 allow you to play golf FREE anytime! The dues also cover security, parks and recreation, boating, fishing, and swimming in the lakes, tennis courts, equestrian center, library use, weight room and so much more. You’ve been here for less than an hour and you’re ready to call Helendale, HOME!
The kids prod you to pull into the equestrian center so they can see the horses. As you drive through the entrance you’re happy to see a Lion’s Club building. It’s important to you and your family that you become part of the community. Like everything else you’ve seen, the equestrian center is awesome! There are rows and rows of roomy stables, an arena, a walker and horses of every breed. Activity abounds as people ride, brush, feed, and groom their horses. It appears that riding lessons are in process, folks visit and exchange horse stories and a group of riders seem to be returning from a long ride. The entire family watches from the sideline as skilled riders take command of their steeds.
Back on the road you weave in and out of the golf course neighborhoods admiring not only the golf course but the fantastic homes that border the course. It is obvious that the golf course is in tip-top shape. Golfers are out enjoying the game and you can’t help but notice that there seems to be no waiting or back-up at holes. That makes for the most enjoyable kind of golf game there is.
Your navigation has brought you out on the back side of Mountain Springs Road. What is that noise? The car becomes silent as everyone strains to hear where the humming noise is coming from. It suddenly dawns on you. “Hey kids, I know that sound. That’s people on motorcycles and quads playing out in the desert.” The car is full of excitement and conversation as everyone wants to know when we get a motorcycle. There are trails .all over the desert but you have to be careful. The desert can be a dangerous place. Old mines, wire fencing, snakes, scorpions, large rocks and breathing holes from old mines pose a dangerous threat. You make a note that it will be a good idea to stick to the trails once you buy the family off-road toys.
It’s been a busy day and everyone’s hungry. Silver Lakes has several choices for dining. Margarita’s Landing, Fratelli Pizza, The Silver Lakes Restaurant, and Margarita’s Landing are all excellent choices. You decide on the Landing as you’ve read there’s an open air patio overlooking North Lake and it happens to face west. Everyone’s seated and the foods been ordered when suddenly the kids stop picking on each other. They stand, go to the patio edge and lean against the wall as they look out over the lake. Wow! Look at that sunset! The entire patio is silent. Burning hues of red, orange and gold blanket the desert sky. It’s a perfect end to a perfect day. Yes, we’re going to love it here.
